This week, I was front-row watching Metallica. As opposed to the usual packed stadiums, however, Metallica took the stage in conversation as part of this year’s Tribeca Festival for their new film Metallica Saved My Life. The iconic band traded their instruments, guitar pedals and deafening amplifiers for an intimate discussion and screening for the documentary, which showcases the impact Metallica has made over their multi-decade career,

The night started with the band making their red-carpet debut at Tribeca after arriving in an SUV convoy outside the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center. James, Lars, Kirk and Robert made their way inside, alongside director Jonas Åkerlund, who also notably debuted his Billy idol Should Be Dead documentary the night before. After everyone made their way inside, it was time to watch the movie. Getting to experience this film alongside the band members made for an unforgettable night, with Metallica frontman James Hetfield seated only one row behind us. The documentary highlighted their beginnings as a band and what brings them together, but then shifts the focus more onto the early members of their fandom who pushed the bnad forward. As opposed to the tone of 2004’s Some Kind of Monster documentary, Metallica Saved My Life is an inspirational story of growth and how music can unite people regardless of their backgrounds.

Following the movie, the band took the stage for a panel, discussing dream venues they’ve yet to play alongside adjusting to their lives back home after spending months on the road. When it comes to bucket-list venues, guitarist Kirk Hammett made a note to play in space, as the band has already conquered unique locations such as playing a frozen soundscape in Antarctica. Drummer & band founder Lars Ulrich, however, claimed he has a list of countries and locations they’ve yet to perform at, and he wants to make sure they get to them all at some point or another to reach their fans.

Metallica Saved My Life is an in-depth look at the positive effects music can have on a global scale, with stories from around the world highlighting the impact that this band has made across their career. This event was one of the highlights from this year’s Tribeca Festival, and it was truly a great experience getting to hear from the band in such an intimate setting when placed in comparison with the venues they sell out every single night of their M72 World Tour.
