When discussing movies this year, there’s one title that seems to find its way into every conversation, and one “Golden” song that plays everywhere you go. KPop Demon Hunters has become a total phenomenon, both as a film in its own right and as a musical powerhouse, and I had the privilege to attend a special screening for the hit animated film at The Museum of Modern Art. Also in attendance were the vocal talents behind the film’s music group HUNTR/X – EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami – alongside several of the creatives responsible for bringing the movie to life.
Following the screening, the cast and creatives took the stage for a discussion with songwriter duo Pasek and Paul, known best for their work on The Greatest Showman along with Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen. The conversation centered around EJAE, who provides the singing voice for HUNTR/X’s leading force, Rumi. Prior to joining the Demon Hunters project, EJAE is an established top songwriter within the K-Pop world, contributing to hits for major groups such as LE SSERAFIM and Red Velvet. From working alongside idol groups to now creating songs within an animated universe, it was interesting to hear how EJAE used her real-life experience to help craft the perfect image of a superstar group. When it comes to the other two HUNTR/X voice talents, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami have an extensive background in music as well. Nuna has collaborated with major artists such as Jack Harlow and Teezo Touchdown, featuring them on her already-impressive albums. Both Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami were brought onto the project later on in development, and given the opportunity to lend their singing talents to the characters of Mira and Zoey for the film’s soundtrack. KPop Demon Hunters‘ narrative is interwoven throughout its music, showing the journey that the HUNTR/X members take throughout the course of the film. It was essential that the movie found the balance between creating songs that felt authentic while also continuing the story.
EJAE spoke in-depth about how all of the songs went through different versions and iterations, and broke down the more “simple” version for the original melody of “Golden” compared to the way it sounds now. Every thought and decision mattered in crafting the identity behind this film and its accompanying music, and it led to a success that soared well beyond anyone’s expectations. The song has become a global phenomenon in its own right, extending beyond even the reach of the film itself and taking on a life of its own across streaming platforms and radio. One of the major takeaways from the panel was just how passionate everyone involved is about the film itself, but also about HUNTR/X. Even with their unique debut through an animated film, HUNTR/X stands on its own two legs with some of today’s biggest K-Pop acts on the charts.
KPop Demon Hunters is authentic and heartfelt, and its no surprise why its connected with so many audiences around the world. Between its vibrant and distinct visual style and soundtrack of memorable songs, this movie is unique in the way that it feels both larger-than-life and so grounded at the same time. After watching the film and hearing from the team who brought it to life, it’s clear that HUNTR/X is here to stay.
